KSB GIW Launches LAPIS Seals for Slurry Pumps

KSB GIW has launched the LAPIS slurry seal, its first mechanical seal designed specifically for GIW slurry pumps used in heavy-duty applications. This new product is a result of a collaboration between KSB GIW and KSB Pegnitz, aimed at improving the performance and durability of slurry pumps. The design was finalized in early 2023, and by July, the first prototypes were delivered. So far, more than 50 units have been manufactured and sent to customers worldwide, including the US, Brazil, South Africa, India, and Indonesia.

The LAPIS seal has undergone rigorous testing to ensure reliability in harsh conditions. In August 2024, researchers tested the seals in KSB GIW’s lab, achieving service class four conditions with solid concentrations up to 67%. Additional tests in Frankenthal confirmed that the seal can handle high sliding speeds exceeding 15 m/s while maintaining excellent performance. These results prove the LAPIS seal is capable of handling extreme slurry environments.

The LAPIS seal offers two standard configurations: LAPIS S, which includes optional water quench and internal flush, and LAPIS GQ, featuring grease quench and internal flush. Key features include protected springs, a clamp collar locking mechanism, and an improved design that eliminates the need for an adapter plate in LCC Gen2 pumps, making installation easier and more cost-effective. With KSB’s reputation for quality manufacturing and service, the LAPIS seal provides an efficient, reliable, and competitively priced solution for slurry pump users worldwide.
